Following an aptly-named study called Project Olympia, MDS Aero Support was awarded a contract from Rolls-Royce to design and build Testbed 80 in 2018. This state of the art facility in Derby was required by Rolls-Royce to test their UltraFan technology demonstrator engine which would incorporate the latest gas turbine technologies to reduce fuel burn and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, including a record setting 140 inch fan and the capability to burn 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) on first run.

Testbed 80 is the largest indoor jet engine test facility in the world and was the highest budget design and build project ever undertaken by MDS. However the fundamental challenges were not in the size of the facility, but in the development and integration of new systems for engine handling, data acquisition and X-ray testing; as well as the management and coordination of the full scope of engineering disciplines within MDS, and a complex supply chain that stretched all around the world.

In normal times, the engineering, project and vendor management would have proved daunting feats onto themselves. However, the advent of the global COVID pandemic in early 2020 and uncertainty around Brexit completely changed the rules of the game while the facility was being built. And yet, MDS found another gear during this period of duress and was able to complete construction, as well as the installation and commissioning of test systems as planned.

How was this even remotely possible for a small Canadian company based in Ottawa?

Come hear the first person accounts from three MDS leaders who were instrumental in delivering Testbed 80 to Rolls-Royce under extreme circumstances.
