Canadian Aeronautics and Space Institute would like to congratulate Dr. Priti Wanjara on recently upgrading her CASI membership from Associate Fellow to Fellow as part of her ongoing commitment to learning and professional development.

Dr. Priti Wanjara is Principal Researcher and Manager at the National Research Council of Canada. She earned her B. Eng (1993) and Ph.D. (1999) degrees from McGill University in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. She started working for the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) in 2002 in the Aerospace division. Throughout her career, she has been concerned with the physical metallurgy of metals/alloys, and in particular with how this knowledge can be applied to welding process design for advanced manufacturing in the aerospace, automotive and power generation industries. Her work has emphasized the understanding of solidification and microstructural phenomena during welding of various aluminum-, magnesium-, iron-, zirconium, nickel- and titanium-based materials. Her most significant research contributions include her pioneering work on electron beam additive manufacturing, linear friction welding and friction stir welding (FSW), which has accelerated fabrication and refurbishment improvements of various components for various small medium enterprises, original equipment manufacturers and maintenance repair and overhaul industries. Dr. Wanjara is the author or co-author of over 200 papers published in refereed journals or conference proceedings and 100 NRC reports. She is recognized internationally as a leading material scientist in advanced manufacturing technologies. Some of her honors & awards include: G. MacDonald Young Award (ASM International), CWB Fellow (Canadian Welding Bureau), Silver Medal Award (Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum), CASI Fellow (Canadian Aeronautics and Space Institute).

    Leading the Future Together!

The 13th Annual Celebration of Women in Engineering (WIE) Wine & Cheese provides an opportunity for students in engineering to expand their network and spark valuable discussions in a low-pressure environment with experts, professionals, faculty, and fellow students in their interested career fields and create lasting bonds for years to come. We believe that the creativity and intellect of all members of society are essential to accelerate progress towards a sustainable future with innovative technology. Every year, the IEEE WIE University of Ottawa Student Branch works hard to bridge the gap between students and industry through events such as Wine & Cheese. This event is entirely run by students for students.

For many students, this represents an opportunity to create meaningful links to the professional industry in Ottawa. For employers, this is an opportunity to meet in person the next wave of innovators and problem solvers. Expect to see many students from co-op and recent/soon-to-be graduates looking to find out more about you and your work! We hope that you will join us again this year!

Group press release | Zurich, Switzerland
    • In its largest order in the private space sector, ABB will supply multispectral imaging systems to Canadian data and analytics company EarthDaily Analytics
    • Satellites equipped with ABB’s technology will be launched starting in 2023, enabling unprecedented daily global coverage of Earth’s ecosystems
    • High-quality imagery enabled by ABB’s technology will provide near real-time information about natural and human-caused change across the planet

ABB has been awarded a contract worth around $30 million by the Canadian data and analytics company EarthDaily Analytics Corp. (EDA) to develop and manufacture next-generation multispectral imaging systems to be placed on 10 satellites (including an in-orbit spare) that will circle the Earth. The order was booked in the first quarter of 2022.

Multispectral imaging systems capture data at specific light frequencies across a wide spectrum, and the EarthDaily Constellation network of satellites will be able to provide high-quality imagery in 22 spectral bands with resolution down to five meters.

CASI FELLOW HERB SARAVANAMUTTOO - Personal Memories

CASI members were greatly saddened to learn of the recent passing of Herb Saravanamuttoo, Carleton University Professor Emeritus and long-time member of CASI.

Herb joined CASI in 1956, just two years after the Institute was founded.  He was admitted to the rank of Fellow in 1976 and served as President for the 1979-80 term.  Throughout his 65 years of membership in CASI, Herb participated actively in every facet of the life of the Institute.  He was an active participant in the Propulsion Section, presented papers at many AERO conferences and served on a variety of committees.  Herb’s vast experience in propulsion was appropriately recognized in 2005 when he was selected as the recipient of the prestigious CASI McCurdy Award that recognizes “outstanding achievement in the science and creative aspects of engineering relating to aeronautics and space research. engineering excellence.”

Perhaps the most abiding memory many of us have of Herb is his being a speaker at CASI Branch meetings – most recently in March of this year when he gave a talk to the Ottawa Branch entitled “Civil Propulsion - The Last 70 Years”.  Shortly after this he was nominated for induction as a member of the Order of Canada.

Personal recollections are invited to be left in the comments section below.
