Ottawa Branch

The mission of the Ottawa Branch is to support local CASI members in their professional career development through monthly events, resources and educational tools. The Branch contributes to national activities like inter-branch initiatives, section development, mentoring and professional development. Close associations are maintained with academic institutions in Ottawa and the Branch likes to organize site visits at various facilities in the NCR. We give priority access to CASI members for these tours where we get to meet interesting people but still provide a good talk to the general public who are welcome to join us – but encouraged to join CASI!

Any members of the Canadian aerospace community willing to participate can contact the branch co-chairs listed below.

The Ottawa Branch Workspace is open to any Member of CASI.

    Ottawa Branch Event
Dr. Jacques Giroux President, Canadian Aeronautics and Space Institute

February 26 at 630 pm at Carleton University jointly sponsored by the Carleton Mechanical and Aerospace Society

February 27 at noon at uOttawa jointly sponsored by the uOttawa CASI Student Branch

The topic: Opportunities with High Altitude Pseudo-Satellites (HAPS)

Jacques Giroux is a Business Development Manager for Space and Defence Systems in ABB’s Measurements and Analytics Business Unit located in Quebec City, Canada. This business unit is part of ABB Inc., a Canadian corporation member of the ABB group that operates in more than 100 countries with about 135,000 employees.

ABB Measurement and Analytics delivers analytical solutions for industrial as well as space and defence applications. Dr. Giroux has worked for this business unit since 1991, at the time when ABB’s space activities were just starting and he has since then been a key leader of ABB’s development in the space business. His experience at ABB spans business, management and engineering aspects of optical instrumentation for remote sensing and Earth observation.

Dr. Giroux obtained a Bachelor degree in Physics in 1981 at Laval University in Quebec City. He did his Masters and PhD in Instrumentation for Nuclear Physics also at Laval University, followed by a Post‐doc at the Max‐Planck‐Institute in Heidelberg, Germany, under an NSERC (Canada) fellowship. Through his career, Dr. Giroux participated on several committees related to the fields of space, optics, remote sensing and Earth observation. He was a member of the R&D committee of INO (National Optics Institute) for about 8 years. He has been involved in research committees with several Canadian universities and industrial committees with the Canadian Space Agency. He represents ABB on the space committee of the Aerospace Industries Association of Canada (AIAC).

Please plan to attend to hear about new opportunities in space and business, Space 2.0 and CASI’s role in the community. A great networking opportunity!

RSVP to jeffbird@rogers.com for the Carleton event and msehr006@uottawa.ca for uOttawa.
