UTIAS Research on Flight Simulator Full-stall Training

Peter Grant is an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies (UTIAS) and head of the Vehicle Simulator Laboratory (VSL). VSL’s research is focused on human-in-the-loop vehicle simulation with emphasis on vehicle modeling and motion cueing. For the past 10 years VSL’s research has focused on the development of flight simulators for upset recovery training.

Loss-of-Control-Inflight (LOC-I) is the leading cause of fatal commercial aviation accidents over the past decade or so. Aerodynamic stall, followed by inappropriate pilot response, has occurred in a number of these LOC-I accidents. In response, the United States Federal Aviation Administration (US-FAA) mandated full-stall recovery training in flight simulators, starting in 2019 for pilots flying within the US. Unfortunately, the flight models in current training simulators are typically not accurate in the post-stall flight regime. Furthermore, developing accurate post-stall flight models requires prohibitively expensive additional wind-tunnel, CFD and/or flight testing. As such, the new regulations only require a statement of compliance that is based on the flight model having representative stall behavior.

This talk will present a brief overview of the problem and the new regulations and then discuss recent research that VSL, in cooperation with the US-FAA and Bombardier Aerospace, has done on the development of representative post-stall flight models from existing data sources. In addition, the talk will cover the results of an experiment that was used to examine the effects of post-stall flight model fidelity on training effectiveness.

The presentation takes place Thursday, November 21, 2019. Refreshments and Networking begin at 7:30 PM with the presentation to begin at 8:00 PM.

Location is the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies (UTIAS), 4925 Dufferin Street, M3H 5T6 (plenty of free parking).
