October 2019 Guest Lecture

Bjarni Tryggvason
(Consultant and University Lecturer)

100th Anniversary Flight of the Silver Dart

Guest Speaker Bjarni Tryggvason, a former astronaut with the Canadian Space Agency, flew on a 12-day mission on the Space Shuttle in 1997, travelling at 7800 m/s at an altitude of 300 km, and circling the Earth 189 times. At the other end of the aerospace spectrum, on February 22, 2009, to mark the 100th anniversary of powered flight in Canada, he piloted a replica of the Silver Dart (the first aircraft to achieve powered flight in Canada), flying at a speed of less than 20 m/s at an altitude of a few meters.

Although we have learned a great deal about aerodynamics in those 100 years, the Silver Dart replica was based primarily on the original 100 year old design.  (The Silver Dart was similar to the Wright Flyers of 1905 or so, which evolved from the 1903 Wright Flyer.) While remaining faithful to the original in most respects, the replica was modified slightly, to ensure success without relying on the trial and error approach of old -- which most often ended in crashes. Bjarni was instrumental in nudging the aircraft’s builders to achieving a flyable replica, in part to ensure his own healthy success with the anniversary flight. The talk will highlight how applying basic aerodynamic principles was essential to a successful 100th anniversary flight.

The presentation takes place Thursday, October 24, 2019. Refreshments and Networking begin at 7:30 PM with the presentation to begin at 8:00 PM.

Location is the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies (UTIAS), 4925 Dufferin Street, M3H 5T6 (plenty of free parking).
